Mainstream popularity and decline
Nu metal's grip on the mainstream came around 1998 when Korn's third album Follow The Leader and Limp Bizkit's debut album Three Dollar Bill Y'all$ became top sellers and spawned hit singles. Three Dollar Bill Yall$ is the debut album of the band Limp Bizkit, released July 1, 1997 on Flip / Interscope Records. Through the turn of the century nu metal's popularity continued with bands like Papa Roach and P.O.D who had multiplatinum selling albums. Papa Roach is a four-piece rock band from Atlanta Georgia. As more and more bands in the nu metal genre began popping up with technical similarities, nu metal started to hit its plateau and began losing its grip on the masses. Between 2001 and 2003 most nu metal bands became scarce on rock radio stations and seen rapid decline in album sales, by 2005 most nu metal bands had disappeared from the lime light. As of 2008 some nu metal acts remain popular such as Korn who have kept their signature sound while Linkin Park has moved away from the nu metal style. Common nu metal songs have a song structure of instrumental introduction, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. The bridge is often a climax to the song, has a relatively different sound to the previous two and sometimes is just one line repeated, getting gradually louder. It is generally louder in the instrumental parts and the choruses than in the verses. Nu metal shares most of these characteristics with grunge.
