Oda is the 17th direct descendant of Oda Nobunaga,[1] a daimyo during Japan's Sengoku period who conquered most of Japan. Oda won the World Junior Championships in his third season of international competition. He turned senior for the Olympic year, because he was guaranteed a senior Grand Prix assignment because he won Junior Worlds. Because it was an Olympic year, it was felt that giving him more international experience would aid him in his quest to make the Olympic team.
Oda made a splash immediately as a senior, winning the bronze medal at his first event and winning the NHK Trophy over favorites Daisuke Takahashi and reigning world bronze medalist Evan Lysacek.
