No. World War II, or the Second World War, (often abbreviated WWII) was a global military conflict which involved a majority of the world's nations, including 322 Squadron of the Royal Air Force was formed from No. 167 Squadron RAF on 12 June 1943 at RAF Woodvale. RAF Woodvale is a Royal Air Force airfield located four miles south of Southport, Merseyside in a village called Formby. It served at RAF West Malling and other stations during the Second World War. From 20 Jun to 21 Jul 1944, and equipped with Spitfire Mk XIVs, the squadron was tasked with intercepting the V-1 Flying Bomb "doodlebug" missiles launched from the Dutch and French coasts towards London. The Fieseler Fi 103, better known as V-1 (German Vergeltungswaffe 1 was an early Cruise missile used during World War Two [1]
On 7 October 1945 the squadron disbanded in Germany as part of the RAF, but the Squadron number was afterwards revived for a unit of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (KLu) in recognition of the squadron's wartime record. [2]
