Nittedal was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Formannskaps-distrikt was the name for a Norwegian local self-government districts put into force in 1838.
Nittedal lies directly northeast of Oslo and serves as a suburb to the capital. (called Christiania from 1624 to 1878 and Kristiania from 1878 to 1924 is the Capital and largest city of Norway. It is located on both sides of the river Nitelva. The southernmost population centre is Hagan. Further north lie the centres of Slattum, Rotnes, Åneby, Grønvoll, Varingskollen and Hakadal. Rotnes is the administrative centre of Nittedal municipality Norway. Åneby is a village in the municipality of Nittedal, Norway. Its population (2006 is 1356. Grønvoll is a village in the municipality of Nittedal, Norway.
The name (Norse Nitjudalr) is an old district name. The North Germanic languages or Scandinavian languages make up one of the three branches of the Germanic languages, a sub-family of the Indo-European languages The first element is the genitive case of the rivername Nitja (now Nitelva), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'. The meaning of the rivername is unknown.
Until 1918 the name was written "Nittedalen".
The coat of arms is from modern times (1987). It represents ski tracks and train tracks.
