New World Island is an island in Notre Dame Bay, just off the coast of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The island is connected to Newfoundland by a causeway. The prominent communities on the island are Summerford, Virgin Arm, Hillgrade, Newville, Cobb's Arm and Herring Neck. Summerford is a small town on the central coast of Newfoundland in Canada. Virgin Arm-Carter's Cove is a Designated place located on New World Island in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Fairbanks-Hillgrade is a Designated place on New World Island in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Newville is a small coastal community on New World Island in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Cobb's Arm is a community on New World Island in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Herring Neck is a fishing community located at the northeastern extremity of New World Island, Notre Dame Bay of Newfoundland There are also several small fishing villages on the western end of the island, and some of its land is set aside as Dildo Run Provincial Park.

A prevailing theory holds that the island's name commemorates the 1523–24 expedition of Giovanni da Verrazzano that visited the coast of Newfoundland (among other places) and established the coast to be part of the New World rather than Asia. Giovanni da Verrazzano (c 1485 &ndash c 1528 was an Italian Explorer of North America, in the service of the French crown. The New World is one of the names used for the non-Eurasian/non-African parts of the Earth specifically the Americas and Australia.
