A nerve root is the initial segment of a nerve leaving the central nervous system. A nerve is an enclosed cable-like bundle of peripheral Axons (the long slender projections of Neurons. In Vertebrates the central nervous system ( CNS) is the part of the Nervous system which is enclosed in the Meninges. It can refer to:
- A cranial nerve root, the beginning of one of the eleven pairs leaving the central nervous system from the brain stem or the highest levels of the spinal cord;
- A spinal nerve root, the beginning of one of the thirty-one pairs oleaving the central nervous system from the spinal cord. Cranial nerves are Nerves that emerge directly from the Brain stem in contrast to Spinal nerves which emerge from segments of the Spinal cord. The brain stem (or brainstem) is the lower part of the Brain, adjoining and structurally continuous with the Spinal cord. The term spinal nerve generally refers to the mixed spinal Nerve, which is formed from the dorsal and ventral roots that come out of the Spinal cord. The spinal cord is a long thin tubular bundle of Nerves that is an extension of the Central nervous system from the brain and is enclosed in and protected Each spinal nerve root consists of the union of a sensory dorsal nut and a motor ventral nut.
