NSB BM69 is an electric multiple unit used by Norges Statsbaner for a variety of commuter trains on the Norwegian railway system, as well as a few medium distance and branch line trains. Rail gauge is the distance between the inner sides of the two parallel rails that make up a railway track. The standard gauge (also named the Stephenson gauge after George Stephenson, or Normal gauge) is a widely-used Rail gauge. Overhead lines or overhead wires are used to transmit Electrical energy to Trams Trolleybuses or Trains at a distance from the An electric multiple unit or EMU is a Multiple unit train consisting of many carriages using Electricity as the motive power Norges Statsbaner commonly know as NSB or the Norwegian State Railways is a Norwegian transport company The Norwegian railway system comprises 4087 km of Standard gauge (1435 mm track of which 2622 km is electrified and 219 km Double track It is the most common type of trainset in Norway, although the newer NSB BM72 has also been introduced. NSB BM72 is one of the two types of Electric multiple unit which is used by Norges Statsbaner for commuter traffic around Oslo and on Jærbanen All the trains were built by Strømmen. Strømmens Værksted A/S was an industrial company based in Skedsmo, Norway, specializing in the production of Rolling stock.

History

During the 1960s NSB realized that they would need a new generation of electric multiple units for local traffic. Both the BM65, 67 and 68 had for thirty years been built with slight modifications, and NSB needed both new and more modern trains for their operations. NSB BM65 is a 3-car Electric multiple unit operated by Norges Statsbaner between 1936 and 1985 NSB BM67 is a 3-car Electric multiple unit operated by Norges Statsbaner between 1953 and 1995 NSB BM68 is a 3-car Electric multiple unit operated by Norges Statsbaner between 1956 and 2001 Among the inspiration was the successful X1 units used in Sweden. X1 is a series of two-car Electric multiple units operated by Greater Stockholm Transport (SL on the Stockholm commuter rail. NSB decided on a number of rationalizations, first of all a new interior so that two new cars could hold the same capacity as three units from the older models. Secondly NSB wanted quicker trains, and increased the maximum speed from 70 to 130 km/h. This increase in speed was sufficient to reduce the number of trains for a given frequency by a third. For instance on the line from Oslo Ø to Ski this allowed NSB to reduce the number of operative car from nine to four. Ski is a Railway station located in Ski, Norway. Located 24 km from Oslo S on Østfoldbanen, it is the point where the railway The 69-set was also given new thyristor engines with 1,200 kW, a lot more than the old units. The thyristor is a solid-state Semiconductor device with four layers of alternating N and P-type material

The first units were delivered on November 1, 1970, and the first series fifteen units (A-series) was put into service from Oslo Ø to Lillestrøm and Ski. Events 996 - Emperor Otto III issues a deed to Gottschalk Bishop of Freising which is the oldest known document using the name Ostarrîchi Year 1970 ( MCMLXX) was a Common year starting on Thursday (link shows full calendar of the Gregorian calendar. Lillestrøm is a Railway station located at Lillestrøm in Skedsmo, Norway. The B-series was delivered a few years later, and used for longer lines, soon followed by more C-series units. The D-series was delivered i the 1980s and custom made for longer distances. The last series was delivered in 1993 as part of the stock for the 1994 Winter Olympics. The 1994 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XVII Olympic Winter Games were a Winter Multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1994 All the original units consisted of twin-car sets, but from 1987 NSB ordered additional middle cars, to make three-car units. This allowed somewhat more flexibility, and NSB kept the A- and B-series as twin-cars so they could combine trains to make any number of cars needed between two and nine. The second two batches of D-series trains delivered in 1990 and 1993 were delivered with three cars.

Not until 1982 were the 69-units put into service outside the Oslo area. At first they were tried out on Flåmsbana, then in 1984 on the Bergen Commuter Rail. Bergen Commuter Rail sometimes called Vossebanen is a Commuter rail between Bergen and Arna, Voss and Myrdal, From 1991 they were also used on the Stavanger Commuter Rail.

The E- and G-series are are rebuilt, with higher comport levels, the former in 1994 for Sørlandsbanen between Kristiansand and Stavanger, the latter on Gjøvikbanen in 2005. Kristiansand is a Railway station located in downtown Kristiansand in Vest-Agder, Norway located on Sørlandsbanen. Stavanger is a Railway station located in downtown Stavanger in Rogaland, Norway and the terminus of Sørlandsbanen. On December 14, 1999 NSB introduced wrap advertising for Freia Melkesjokolade on three of the trians, but chose to discontinue outside advertisements after a while.
