Mr. Fantasy (not to be confused with "Dear Mr. Fantasy", the title song on this album) is the debut album by English rock band Traffic. " Dear Mr Fantasy " is a rock song by Traffic off their 1967 album Mr England is a Country which is part of the United Kingdom. Traffic were an English rock band formed in 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. It was released in 1967. For the recording, group members included Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason, however Mason left the band before the album was released. Nicola James "Jim" Capaldi ( 2 August 1944 &ndash 28 January 2005) was an English Musician and Songwriter Stephen Lawrence "Steve" or "Stevie" Winwood (born 12 May 1948 in Handsworth, Birmingham) is an English Singer-songwriter For other people by this name see Chris Wood. Christopher Gordon Blandford 'Chris' Wood (born 24 June 1944, in David Thomas Mason (born 10 May 1944) is an English Musician, singer songwriter, and Guitarist from Worcester The album reached the number 16 position in the UK album chart on 30th December 1967, and reached number 88 in the American Billboard charts. Considered by far the strangest and most art rock style album that Traffic released, Mr. Art rock is a term describing a subgenre of Rock music that tends to have "experimental or avant-garde influences" and emphasizes "novel sonic texture Fantasy didn't gain much more than a cult following for Traffic at the time. Critics seemed to like the album, though, and most said it was clear that Steve Winwood and Traffic were good at putting together semi-mainstream psychedelic rock, except this album was not quite mainstream enough. Psychedelic rock is a style of Rock music that attempts to replicate the mind-altering experiences of hallucinogenic drugs. By their next release, the eponymous Traffic, the band was said to have worked through that. This album features even more horns, flutes, and less rock-style instruments than most of Traffic's future releases. In a Symphony orchestra the horn section is the group of musicians who play the horn (sometimes referred to as the French horn a brass instrument descended The flute is a Musical instrument of the Woodwind family Unlike other woodwind instruments a flute is a Reedless wind instrument that produces its Rock music is a genre of Popular music often though not necessarily employing Electric guitar, Bass guitar, and Drums. The sitar was used much more in this album than any other later Traffic albums, undoubtedly because of Dave Mason's influence. The sitar ( Hindi: सितार Urdu: ستار Persian: سی تار) is a Plucked stringed instrument.
The first US version of the album on United Artists Records had a different title Heaven Is In Your Mind and a different cover that featured 3 members of the group without Dave Mason. United Artists Records was a Record label founded by Max E Youngstein of United Artists in 1958 initially to distribute Soundtracks The title was quickly changed back to Mr. Fantasy but the new cover remained until Island Records re-issued the UK version in the late 1970s. Island Records is a Record label that was founded by British record producers in Jamaica.
For the original US edition the group changed the album substantially. The song order was changed and a short snippet of the group's November 1967 single "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" was added between most of the songs. " Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush " is a single by Traffic. The US LP also added three songs from the group's UK singles, "Paper Sun" and "Hole In My Shoe" and "Smiling Phases" (B-side) while deleting two Dave Mason songs "Hope I Never Find Me There" and "Utterly Simple. " Paper Sun " is a song and debut-single released in May 1967 by British Psychedelic rock band Traffic. Hole In My Shoe is a song by Traffic which as a single release reached #2 in the UK charts in 1967 " The final track on the US album "Were A Fade, You Missed This' is actually the ending of "Paper Sun" as it appeared in the earlier single. There are also many differences between the stereo and mono mixes for the album. Both the US and UK editions were released in stereo and mono.
The album was engineered by Phil Brown who when asked what was his favourite memory of engineering he responded: "Recording Dear Mr Fantasy, one o'clock in the morning, November 1967. " [1]
