Geography

The town is located in the hills of the Eifel, in the narrow valley of the Rur river. The Eifel is a low mountain range in western Germany. It occupies parts of southwestern North Rhine-Westphalia and northwestern Rhineland-Palatinate The Rur -German in Dutch and French Roer, &mdash not to be confused with the Ruhr &mdash is a river in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands

The historic town center was not destroyed in World War II, thus the many half-timbered houses and narrow streets nearly unchanged for 300 years make it a popular tourist attraction nowadays. World War II, or the Second World War, (often abbreviated WWII) was a global military conflict which involved a majority of the world's nations, including Historically the main industry of the town were cloth-mills.

History

Above the city is the castle Monschau, which dates back to the 13th century — in 1198 the first mention of Monschau was made. Starting in 1433 the castle was used as a seat of the dukes of Jülich. In 1543 Emperor Charles V. besieged it as part of the Geldern Feud, captured it and plundered the town. Charles V (24 February 1500 &ndash 21 September 1558 was However the castle stayed with Jülich until 1609, then it became part of Palatinate-Neuburg. Palatinate-Neuburg (Herzogtum Pfalz-Neuburg is a former state of the Holy Roman Empire, founded in 1505

In 1795 the French captured the area, and under the name Montjoie made it the capital of a canton of the Roer département. The French Revolution (1789–1799 was a period of political and social upheaval in the History of France, during which the French governmental structure previously an Roer is the name of a département of the First French Empire in present day Germany and the Netherlands. After the area became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815, Monschau became the capital of a district, the Kreis Montjoie. The Kingdom of Prussia (Königreich Preußen was a German kingdom from 1701 to 1918 and from 1871 was the leading state of the German Empire, comprising In 1918 William II, German Emperor, changed the name to Monschau.

In 1972 the town was enlarged with the previous independent municipalities Höfen, Imgenbroich, Kalterherberg, Konzen, Mützenich and Rohren.
