Mira Nair was born in Rourkela,[1] Orissa, where her Punjabi father (Nayyar)she spells her surname Nair(having his roots in Amritsar, Punjab) was employed. Nāyar (Malayalam നായര് naːjar most commonly spelt Nair) is the name of a Hindu upper caste from the southern Indian state of Kerala Rourkela is located in the northwestern tip of the Indian state of Orissa at the heart of a rich mineral belt Orissa (ଓଡ଼ିଶା is a state located on the east coast of India, by the Bay of Bengal. She was the youngest of three children from a middle-class family. Her father was a civil servant and her mother a social worker.
