It is named in honour of the Irish trained racehorse The Minstrel, winner of the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1977. The Minstrel (1974-1990 was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Prior to 1991 the race was run at Phoenix Park in late April or early May and was restricted to three-year-old horses only. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 1996, having been previously classed as a Listed race. Before 2001 it was contested over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres). Three-year-olds were excluded from the race from 2002 to 2006.
