Biography

Clarke was born Michael James Dick in Spokane, Washington. Washington ( is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. His father was an artist and his mother was a musician. Clarke ran away from home when he was 17 years old and hitchiked to California to become a musician. California ( is a US state on the West Coast of the United States, along the Pacific Ocean.

In legend, Clarke was said to have been discovered by Byrds founder David Crosby while playing bongos on the beach, but in fact he was discovered by singer-songwriter Ivan Ulz. David Van Cortlandt Crosby (born August 14, 1941) is an American Guitarist, Singer, and Songwriter. Ivan Ulz (born May 4, 1944 in Los Angeles, California) is an American Songwriter. And, he was not discovered on the beach per se, but in San Francisco's North Beach. Clarke was not an accomplished musician prior to joining the Byrds. He was reportedly hired more for his resemblance to Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones than his percussion skills.
