Metius is a lunar impact crater located in the rugged highlands to the southeast of the moon's near side. Selenographic coordinates are used to refer to locations on the surface of Earth 's Moon. For the crater see Metius (crater. For Jacob Metius see Jacob Metius. In the broadest sense the term impact crater can be applied to any depression natural or manmade resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with larger body The term highland is used to denote any Mountainous region or elevated mountainous Plateau. To the southwest the rim is attached to Fabricius crater. Fabricus is a lunar Impact crater that is located within the northeast part of the Janssen walled plain. Offset to the east-northeast is the heavily worn Brenner crater. Brenner is an old lunar crater that lies in the rugged southeastern part of the Moon 's near side Further away to the northeast is Rheita crater and the long gorge Vallis Rheita. Rheita is a lunar Impact crater located in the southwestern sector of the moon For the song see CANYONMID. For the band see Canyon (band. A canyon (rarely cañon) or gorge Vallis Rheita is a linear valley on the near side of the Moon.
The rim of Metius does not protrude prominently into the surroundings and has an insignificant rampart. A few small craters mar the outer wall, but generally it has a smoothed down appearance that is almost free of terraces. The floor is relatively flat with low central peaks. The most prominent crater on the floor is 'Metius B', located near the northeast rim.
The eponym for this crater is the Dutch geometer and astronomer Adriaan Adriaanszoon, who went by the name of Metius. For the crater see Metius (crater. For Jacob Metius see Jacob Metius.
Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Metius crater.
