Melhus was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Formannskaps-distrikt was the name for a Norwegian local self-government districts put into force in 1838. Hølonda was separated from Melhus in 1860. Hølonda is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county Norway Flå was separated from Melhus in 1880. Flå is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county Norway. These two were, however, again merged with Melhus January 1, 1964. Horg was merged with Melhus the same date. The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Melhus (Norse Meðalhúsar), since the first church was built there.
