Meland was separated from Alversund October 15, 1923. Alversund is a former municipality in Hordaland county Norway The northern part of Holsnøyni was transferred from Herdla to Meland January 1, 1964. Herdla, is an island and former municipality in Hordaland county Norway

The administrative centre is at Frekhaug, in the south-eastern part of the island Holsnøy, which makes up the larger part of the municipality. In addition there are a number of smaller islands, among which are Flatøy and Ypsøy. Flatøy (or Flatøyni as referred to on older maps is one of two smaller islands that together with the larger island Holsnøy make up the municipality Meland When the region of Nordhordland is approached from Bergen, Meland is entered via the 1614 m long Nordhordland Bridge, built in 1994. Nordhordland is a traditional district in the western part of Norway, consisting of the northern portion of the county of Hordaland. is the second largest city in Norway. The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Meland (Norse Meðalland), since the first church was built there. Old Norse is the North Germanic language that was spoken by inhabitants of Scandinavia and inhabitants of their overseas settlements during the Viking Age The first element is meðal 'middle', the last element is land n 'land, farm'. The meaning is 'the farm lying between (in the middle of) other farms'.
