Meganisi or Meganissi (Greek:, Modern: Μεγανήσι, literally big island), older forms: Meganision and Meganission is a Greek island and municipality immediately to the east-southeast of the island of Lefkada. Greek (el ελληνική γλώσσα or simply el ελληνικά — "Hellenic" is an Indo-European language, spoken today by 15-22 million people mainly Greece (Ελλάδα transliterated: Elláda, historically, Ellás,) officially the Hellenic Republic (Ελληνική Δημοκρατία An island (ˈaɪlənd or isle (/ˈaɪl/ is any piece of land that is completely surrounded by water in two dimensions above high tide and isolated from other significant Lefkada, or Leucas (Λευκάδα le̞fˈkaða Ancient Greek and Katharevousa: Λευκάς Leukás; Santa Maura is a Greek The municipality includes the offshore islands of Skorpios (pop. Its total population was 1,092 at the 2001 census. But for the two persons on Skorpiós, all lived on the island of Meganísi.
The island has three villages: the central village of Katomeri (pop. 492) and the ports of Vathy (145) and Spartochori (or Spiglia, 453). Vathy or Vathi (Greek Βαθύ lies on the Island of Meganisi which is part of the Lefkada prefecture in Greece. There is also a harbour at Atheni Bay used mainly by fishing boats. Meganisi is connected with Lefkada by a car ferry service from Vathy and Spartochori. Meganissi has a school, a lyceum (middle school), banks, churches and a few squares (plateies). Plateia or platia ( πλατεία) is the Greek word for Town square. The island has no secondary school, so pupils attend the nearby school in Nydri, on Lefkada.
