It is a common misconception that X6 contradicts the opening of Mega Man Zero, which is set a hundred years after the X series and shows Zero awakening from being sealed away, and that Mega Man Zero was meant to follow up directly from X5. Mega Man Zero, known in Japan as, is the first installment in the Mega Man Zero series, the fifth series in Capcom's Mega Mega Man X5 (ロックマンX5 Rockman X5) is the fifth main game in the Mega Man X series by Capcom. This is due to fans' overreaction to developer interviews stating that Mega Man Zero was in development before X6 was. In truth, Mega Man Zero's opening is far more in line with Mega Man X6 than it is Mega Man X5. The opening of Mega Man Zero depicts Zero being intentionally sealed (his name is on the door leading to him, and he is protected by a force field), which happens only within Mega Man X6. In Mega Man X5, Zero was never sealed, he was merely left for dead. This is true, since Inafune himself has stated that he "slightly tailored" Mega Man Zero's opening to be more in line with Mega Man X6's ending.

Story

The story begins three weeks after Mega Man X5, with Zero missing, presumed dead, and the Earth's surface rendered uninhabitable. Mega Man X5 (ロックマンX5 Rockman X5) is the fifth main game in the Mega Man X series by Capcom. Rumors are spreading through the Reploid World of a Maverick named the Zero Nightmare, a Reploid of pure evil that is spreading chaos throughout the world. A Reploid, or in the original Japanese games from the Science fiction Video game series Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero A Maverick, in the video game series Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, and Mega Man ZX, is a Reploid who generally X, curious about this Maverick, and angered by its use of his late friend’s name, seeks him out.

After destroying the Zero Nightmare, X learns that Zero is alive, just recovering from damage sustained in the last game. When Zero is recovered, he joins X and they seek out the researchers who built the Zero Nightmare.

X finds the lead researcher, Gate, in his lab. After X defeats Gate in battle, Gate reveals that he has rebuilt Sigma, the leader of the Mavericks. Sigma kills Gate, then challenges X to a duel. X is able to defeat the rebuilt Sigma.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to Mega Man X5. The player can select X with the option to outfit him with different armors offering unique abilities (most of which have to be downloaded, as always, through Dr. Light's hidden capsules. ) Zero can be unlocked after finding and defeating the Zero Nightmare, bringing his own weapons and techniques to the fold, including a refined Z-Saber fighting style. Both characters can be equipped with various power-up items earned after rescuing a reploid.

Items

Armors

Just as in Mega Man X5, all four pieces of each armor must be found before the armor can be used.

Falcon Armor - A watered-down version of the same armor from Mega Man X5. As a result, certain abilities have been altered. X starts the game in this armor.

Abilities

Blade Armor - Designed with a Samurai motif, this armor uses strength and air mobility as its strong points. The Z-Saber takes the form of a broadsword in this armor.

Abilities

Shadow Armor - Designed with a ninja motif, this armor excels in some areas and fails in others, making this armor quite unbalanced. The Z-Saber takes the form of a katana and turns orange in this armor.

Abilities

Ultimate Armor - The enhanced version of the X4 armor. Available by entering a secret code. When activated, X will start the intro stage in this armor.

Abilities

Black Armor - Upgraded armor for Zero accessed by a code. A method of getting it without a code exists in the game (beat Zero Nightmare at level 4) but it is impossible to do this in a normal game.

X6 is also widely regarded as the toughest game in the series, by far. Some fans appreciate the additional challenge, but others consider the game overly frustrating.
