The majority of the episode's narrative consists of a continuous flashback focused on Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau, Jr.), revealing his activities after his departure from the Island in the episode "Live Together, Die Alone" and his purpose aboard the freighter Kahana as a spy for Ben Linus (Michael Emerson). The episode's airdate was heavily influenced by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike and rescheduled several times. The 2007&ndash2008 Writers Guild of America strike, or more commonly known as the Writers' Strike was a strike by the Writers Guild of America East The episode's script was completed on the same day that strike action began. ABC pledged to air the completed eight episodes, regardless of the strike's resolution, thus making the episode a potential season finale, a situation that was not desired by the production staff, who felt the episode's cliffhanger was unsuitable to end the season.

The episode received mixed to positive critical reactions. The most discussed plot point was the attack on Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan) at the end of the episode, with theories split on Rousseau's status and attackers. Danielle Rousseau is a Fictional character on the ABC Drama Television series Lost, which chronicles the lives of Mira Furlan (born 7 September 1955 in Zagreb, Croatia, is a Croatian and Serbian actress and Singer Opinion was also split on the cliffhanger, with some reviewers agreeing with the producers' sentiments about its suitability, and others citing the shock value of the scene.

Production

The episode marks Cynthia Watros' second appearance as Libby since the character was murdered by Michael late in the second season. Cynthia Michele Watros (born September 2, 1968) is an Emmy-Award winning American Television actress, who also starred Elizabeth, commonly known as " Libby," " ? " typically pronounced " Question Mark " is the 45th episode of Lost. Watros was given star billing in the second season;[6] however, she became the first and only starring actress to not receive an episode with flashbacks from her character's perspective as she was killed off late in the season, although she did appear in a few flashbacks of other characters' episodes. [7] While a flashback episode was originally planned for Watros's character Libby in the second season, it did not happen,[8] and despite statements that Watros would appear in flashbacks throughout the third season, this also failed to happen. [9] The writers stated that Libby's mysterious backstory will be revealed through multiple flashbacks of a new character not aboard Oceanic 815 introduced in the fourth or fifth season. Lost is an Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning American serial drama television series. [10] Both of Libby's appearances in "Meet Kevin Johnson" are hallucinations and do not reveal more about the character. The first appearance occurs in a hospital after Michael's suicide attempt; the second occurs when Michael attempts to blow up the freighter. First season regular cast member Malcolm David Kelley returned in an uncredited cameo as Michael's ten year-old son, Walt. Malcolm David Kelley (born May 12, 1992) is an American Child actor. A combination of make-up and CGI was used to make Kelley look younger and more like a ten year-old. [1]

The writers had planned to kill the character Karl sometime in the final three seasons. In 2007, actor Blake Bashoff, who plays Karl, was cast as Moritz in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. Spring Awakening is a Tony Award -winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. [11] Bashoff informed the writers that he would be away for six months starting in December 2007 and the writers proceeded to kill off Karl. When they shot his death, the scene ended with "snipers emerging through the jungle in these incredible, elaborate, jungle camouflage uniforms", according to Bashoff; however, this was cut in post-production. The writers hope to have Karl return to Lost at some point to "serve a cool purpose like [Tom in 'Meet Kevin Johnson']", according to Bashoff. [12]

In "Meet Kevin Johnson", Michael visits Tom's penthouse suite, where Tom and his lover Arturo (Francesco Simone) are revealed to be the only known homosexual Lost characters. In the third season premiere, Tom tells Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) that she is not his type. [13] This prompted much online speculation in regard to Tom's sexual orientation. [14][15][16] A few weeks later, executive producers/writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse hinted that a character would eventually be revealed as gay. Damon Laurence Lindelof (born April 24 1973) is an American Television writer and executive most recently noted as the co-creator and executive producer Carlton Cuse (born 22 March 1959 in Mexico City, Mexico) Although born in Mexico City Carlton Cuse grew up in Boston and Orange [17] After the Internet community suggested that Tom was gay,[18][19] actor M. Dr Jack Shephard is a Fictional character on the ABC television series Lost played by Matthew Fox. Matthew Chandler Fox (born July 14, 1966) is an American actor and former model. "[20] After the broadcast of "Meet Kevin Johnson", Lindelof and Cuse confirmed that the line from the third season premiere is an allusion to Tom's sexuality, but felt that it needed to be explicitly confirmed in the show, although Lindelof noted that "it was not subtle, to say the least". The Writers Guild of America went on strike on November 4, 2007[27]—the day that the writers finished editing the final draft of "Meet Kevin Johnson"'s script. "[31] ABC decided that the eight episodes would be aired from January to March, regardless of whether any more episodes were produced in the 2007–2008 season. [32] Despite picketing on most days, Cuse, a member of the WGA negotiating committee, continued to oversee post-production from mid-November,[33] until negotiations between the Guild and the AMPTP broke down in early December, after which he boycotted his producing duties on the show until the strike was resolved. She theorized the attack of Rousseau and Karl to be masterminded by Ben, and proposed a drinking game in which the player drinks "every time Benjamin Linus allllmost[sic] convinces you that he's playing for the "good guys"—but then does something so despicable you want to climb through your screen and squish his little beady eyeballs like peeled grapes". The reviewer thought Michael pawning Jin's watch for "a gun that doesn't even succeed in killing him" was "heartbreaking" and equally lamented Michael's post-departure life and Rousseau's apparent death. She also thought Tom's off-island appearance was "super cool", because "it sets up the possibility for a number of people to get off the island, courtesy of Ben, as long as they work for him" and provides a greater leniency for the writers when creating storylines. [44] Jay Glatfelter of The Huffington Post said the episode was "a shocker" and opened his review with the sentence: "Well Michael is officially back. The Huffington Post (often referred to on the Internet as HuffPo) is a liberal News Website and aggregated Weblog . . but what the hell?! Rousseau is dead?!". Speaking of the quality of the season as a whole, Glatfelter gave it an "A-". [45]

Elissa Bass of The Day, a newspaper that serves New London, Connecticut, gave the episode a negative review. New London is a seaport city and a Port of entry on the northeast coast of the United States Tom's explanation that the Island will not let people kill themselves was "the biggest bomb dropped", but "other than that I’d say it was a pretty anticlimactic hour. " Exodus " constitutes the 23rd and 24th episodes and the first season finale of Lost. She answered several questions in her review by using the episode's plot and finished answering the question "Who ambushed Rousseau, Alex and Karl?" with the answer "No clue. Seriously. And then they whacked Rousseau!"[50] Alan Sepinwall of The Star-Ledger agreed with Lindelof's and Cuse's statements that the episode would be an inefficient season finale, saying the episode contained "lots of balls up in the air but no immediate peril for anyone but a minor character like Alex, and a cliffhanger ending that felt rushed and very un-"Lost"-like. [51] Likewise, Erin Martell of TV Squad was thankful the episode did not close the season, but noted that it "wasn't a bad episode" and "did have its moments".
