Although travelers had passed through and explored South Texas, it wasn't until the 1740's that established settlements began to dot the landscape, mostly on the south side of the Rio Grande. South Texas is a region of the US state of Texas that lies roughly south of or beginning at San Antonio.
In the early 1850s, when John McAllen arrived in the Rio Grande Valley, development began to come together where McAllen is today.
