The structure was more widely known as Boston Arena until 1979 when Northeastern alumnus George J. Matthews helped fund its refurbishment. Matthews is also the place where hockey programs at Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, MIT, Northeastern, Tufts and Wentworth Institute of Technology all began. Today, Matthews Arena is home to the Northeastern Huskies men's and women's hockey teams, and men's basketball team as well as the Wentworth Institute of Technology's men's hockey team. Currently, Northeastern is reviewing a $25 million investment plan to bring the building to ADA accessibility specifications as well as update various systems within the arena. Much of the money is earmarked for a new athletic center which will be constructed alongside Matthews to provide space for athletic offices and student programming. The renovations, if approved, should be completed by the 2009 season. This renovation would include the addition of approximately four hundred luxury seats in a corporate box setting.
