Anderson attended St. Xavier High School, which was also attended by major leaguers Paul Byrd, Chris Burke and Jack Savage. Anderson was named top prospect in the Cape Cod League in 1996 and was named the 24th best prospect in 1998 by Baseball America. Adding to the list of bizarre sports injuries, Anderson holds the dubious distinction of being the only player to injure himself in an octopus throwing contest. During a Detroit Red Wings game at the Joe Louis Arena, Anderson participated in an octopus throwing contest in an effort to win Red Wings playoff tickets and tore a muscle in the armpit of his throwing arm as a result. After returning from the injury, he was unable to hit 90 mph on his fastball in his remaining days in Detroit.
Since then, he has not posted an ERA under 4. 72 in the Major Leagues, or 3. 79 in the minors. In 2005 he walked 11 batters and gave up 19 hits in 10 innings with the Colorado Rockies.
