During the fifth season, The Syndicate discovered that Marita had betrayed them, and was providing information to Mulder. As a result, she was used as a guinea pig for the vaccination that The Syndicate had been developing to fight the black oil. Black Oil is a creation of the TV series The X-Files, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The tests, having been conducted on Marita for about a year, disfigured her. Later in season 7, she returns, having been restored to normal, presumably in exchange for helping the Cigarette Smoking Man. However, she returns again at the end of the seventh season to help Alex Krycek attempt to murder the Cigarette Smoking Man. They do this by pushing him and his wheelchair down a flight of stairs.
In the series finale, she is called as a witness to testify on Mulder's behalf during his murder trial. However, Mulder soon pushed for her to be dismissed from the witness chair, fearing that if Marita was to divulge certain information, she would be killed because of it.
