The Marion Mayhem are a charter member of the Continental Indoor Football League. The Continental Indoor Football League ( CIFL) is an indoor football league based along the Northeastern United States region They play their home games at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Marion, Ohio. The Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a 3500-seat multi-purpose Arena in Marion Ohio. Marion is a city in the US state of Ohio and the County seat of Marion County. The Mayhem are the first pro football team to be based in the area since the NFL's Oorang Indians ceased operations in 1923. The National Football League ( NFL) is the largest professional American football league. The Oorang Indians were a Traveling team in the National Football League from LaRue Ohio (near Marion) (The Indians technically represented nearby LaRue, Ohio, but tiny LaRue had no football field and so played nearly all their games on the road. LaRue is a village in Marion County, Ohio, United States. The population was 775 at the 2000 census. Oorang's only "home" game was played in Marion, a 20-6 win over Columbus on October 8, 1922. )
The Mayhem suffered a losing inaugural season in 2006, however the Mayhem were within one game of the 2006 GLIFL playoffs. The Mayhem missed the playoffs due to the Battle Creek Crunch holding the tie breaker between the two teams.
Marion finished 6-6 in 2007, good enough to make the CIFL playoffs. After knocking off the Muskegon Thunder in the first round of the CIFL playoffs, the Mayhem's season was ended by a loss to the Michigan (formally Port Huron) Pirates.
The 2008 regular season for the Marion Mayhem ended with a successful goal line stand against instate rival Miami Valley. With a 7-5 record the Mayhem were eliminated from the 2008 CIFL playoffs. The Mayhem players had already turned in their equipment for the year when it was announced that the defending CIFL champion Rochester Raiders (12-0) were suspended from the league and playoffs and the Mayhem would replace the former champs in the CIFL Atlantic Conference Western Division playoffs where they would face their conference foe Saginaw.
