Cotelo began his career at Sporting de Gijón and played for their B team in the 1993-94 season. Real Sporting de Gijón is a Spanish football team from Gijón, Asturias. He then spent a season in the senior team, playing just five matches before getting sent back to the B team.
In the 1996-97 season Cotelo started in Sporting's A team, but spent the second half of the season at CD Badajoz. Club Deportivo Badajoz is a football team based in Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura. After four full seasons at Sporting he moved to Sevilla FC but played only five league games before a transfer to UD Las Palmas.
