Cotelo began his career at Sporting de Gijón and played for their B team in the 1993-94 season. Real Sporting de Gijón is a Spanish football team from Gijón, Asturias. He then spent a season in the senior team, playing just five matches before getting sent back to the B team.
In the 1996-97 season Cotelo started in Sporting's A team, but spent the second half of the season at CD Badajoz.
