Mahmud Raqi District is situated in the western part of Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. Kapiśa (=Kapisha (کاپيسا is one of the 34 Provinces of Afghanistan. Afghanistan /æfˈgænɪstæn/ officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan ( Pashto: د افغانستان اسلامي جمهوریت, It borders with Parvan Province to the South and with other districts from the Kapisa Province: Nejrab District and the former Kohistan District to the North and Tagab District to the South-East. Parwān ( also spelled Parvān) once also the name of an ancient town in the Hindu Kush mountains is today an administrative province in northern Afghanistan Tagab District is one of the 29 districts of Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan. The district center is the town of Mahmud Raqi - the provincial capital. The town of Mahmud Raqi (also Mahmud-i-Raqi Mahmood-e Raqi is the capital of Kapisa Province and center of Mahmud Raqi District in Afghanistan. The population is 56,800 (2006).
