Founded in 1943, the university was originally known as the "University of Medical Sciences" (Thai มหาวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร์) It is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Thailand and one of the highest ranking in the country in terms of research power, research income, and numbers of international students and lecturers. Mahidol University is one of the most prestigious universities in Asia in general and in Thailand in particular.
