The name "pataca" was derived from the then popular silver coin in Asia, the Mexican peso (eight reales), known in Portuguese as the pataca mexicana. The peso ( sign: $; code: MXN) is the currency of Mexico. The symbol used for the peso is " $ " basically Portuguese ( or língua portuguesa) is a Romance language that originated in what is now Galicia (Spain and northern Portugal.
