Mablethorpe has been in existence for many centuries although part of it was lost to the sea in the 1540s. For example, records of the Fitzwilliam family of Mablethorpe Hall date back to the 1300s. In the 19th century it was also a centre for ship breaking during the winter. Ship breaking or ship demolition is a type of Recycling involving the breaking up of Ships for Scrap.
The town was much visited by Alfred Lord Tennyson in the 19th century and by D. H. Lawrence in the early 20th century; Mablethorpe is mentioned by characters in his Sons and Lovers. Alfred Tennyson 1st Baron Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892 was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and remains one of the most popular English poets David Herbert Richards Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930 was an English writer of the 20th century whose prolific and diverse output included Novels short Sons and Lovers is a novel by the English writer D H Lawrence.
In January 1953 the town was hit by the disastrous east coast floods.
So far Mablethorpe, apart from Golden Sands, has remained immune from the large caravan parks that now dominate resorts such as Skegness and Ingoldmells, although some smaller ones do exist. Attractions at the resort include a small fairground and the sandy beach. Its beach is long, wide and flat, with golden sand and separated from the town by a narrow strip of large sand-dunes. Sand is a naturally occurring Granular material composed of finely divided rock and Mineral particles In physical Geography, a dune is a Hill of Sand built by Aeolian processes.
A sand train operates to take visitors to the north end of the beach, where there is a small animal sanctuary.
