History

Lumpkin County was created on December 3, 1832. The county was named for former governor of Georgia Wilson Lumpkin. Colonial governors James Oglethorpe, Resident Trustee, 1733 - 1743 ( Oglethorpe County) William Stephens, Wilson Lumpkin ( January 14, 1783 - December 28, 1870) was a governor of Georgia, and a United States Representative Lumpkin's daughter, Martha Atalanta Lumpkin Compton, was the source for the city name of Marthasville (which was the previous name for Atlanta). Marthasville was the previous name of Atlanta, Georgia. Marthasville was named after Governor Wilson Lumpkin 's daughter Martha it was officially incorporated
