Lucy Westenra is an attractive and vivacious young woman. The first character in the novel to fall under Count Dracula’s spell, when Lucy becomes a vampire, her much-praised chastity and virtue are gone, and her soul is left beyond the promise of eternal rest. Vampires are mythological or folkloric revenants who subsist by feeding on the blood of the living Rising from her grave, she walks at night, preying on young children, who come to know her as "the Bloofer [beautiful] Lady".

Determined that such an end is unfit for an English lady of Lucy’s caliber (and because due to her vampirism and taste for children's blood, she could possibly infect them), Abraham Van Helsing must convince John Seward, Arthur Holmwood and Quincey Morris that she is a vampire to be destroyed.
