Like many English villages the mainly car owning population has led to a decline in the number of shops in the village. While the community once supported several businesses there is now only one grocery shop, which also serves as the village post office. As well as the post office there are two pubs ('The Generals Arms' and 'The Rodney'), the Elm Green Preparatory School, a village hall. Elm Green Preparatory School is a day school which takes boys and girls from 4 to 11 There are two long established churches, the Anglican St Mary the Virgin and the United Reformed Church. Both churches are architecturally interesting and have long histories.
The manor was once a possession of Robert the Bruce[1][2]
Thomas Hooker who founded the Colony of Connecticut lived in the village as a child and was a school teacher there before going to Holland and then to New England. Robert I King of Scots ( 11 July, 1274 &ndash 7 June, 1329) usually known in modern English as Robert the Bruce ( (see [3] and [4])
