Liam returned on 1 April 2008 when he, along with his mother Bianca Jackson, his half-siblings Tiffany Dean and Morgan Jackson-King and his step-sister Whitney Dean, was being thrown out their house by their landlord. After spending a week in care due to the police finding them homeless (which led to Bianca getting arrested as she punched a police officer), Liam returned to Walford after departing four years previously and stayed with his great-grandmother Pat Evans, along with his half-siblings, stepsister and mother. Although initially refusing to speak to his mother after his ordeal in social care, Liam eventually came round and reunited with Bianca at a Branning family party, where he met the rest of his extended family. However, unbeknownst to his parents, Liam spent the rest of the afternoon at the swing park. Liam then packed his bags and ran away from home, leaving both Ricky and Bianca frantic with worry. They finally located him at the swing park and took him to the cafė, where Liam confided in his parents that he hated school and that the system was different from his old school. Whilst Bianca proved to be no help at all, Ricky told his son that when he was at school he just had to face his fears and they no longer became a problem. He encouraged his son to do likewise, and told Liam that if he ever had any problems then he just had to come to him. Liam then felt much better.

However on 12 May, Ricky and Bianca were called into Liam's school, where they had a meeting with his teacher. Events 1191 - Richard I of England marries Berengaria of Navarre. It soon became apparent that Liam was not doing well in all of his academic studies. Despite having warned Bianca to keep control, Ricky flew off the handle when the teacher insinuated that it was Ricky and Bianca's fault that Liam was not doing well. After the meeting Ricky, Bianca and Pat sat down and talked to Liam in a bid to get to the root of his problems. Pat then suggested that they ask Libby Fox to tutor Liam until he got the hang of his school work and Ricky offered to pay Libby the money to do so. On 26 May, Liam discovered that Whitney was hiding Wellard at the allotments after following her there. However just as he had found it Vinnie caught him in the act. After Whitney and Liam explained that the pineapple had not been there's to give, Vinnie agreed to give them the pineapple back but they had to clean his car every week until he said otherwise. When they got back home after cleaning his car Bianca reluctantly agreed to let Wellard live with them.

Meanwhile, Liam found himself still struggling under Libby's tuteledge. This worried Libby, and she began to look up what might be Liam's problems. After a lot of research, Libby concluded to Bianca on 3 June that she thought Liam might suffer from dyslexia. Eventually Ricky decided that in order to support his son he would also take the test. On 6 June Ricky and Liam took the test, where it was concluded that there was a strong possibility that Liam had dyslexia whereas Ricky was just not intelligent.
