The drama began with a one-off pilot, written by Stephen Churchett from an idea by Russell Lewis, with Morse creator Colin Dexter in a consultant's role. Lewis investigates when a devout young Christian desecrates a church by committing suicide on its altar, claiming in a call to the police that it was "murder".
