On 18th July 2007, following torrential rain, the only bridge running through the village was swept away, cutting the town in half. The bridge was part of the N59 road and had stood there for 182 years. Locals see this as potentially damaging to its lucrative trade in tourism. The damage to the bridge now necessitates a 100km detour in order to avoid the obstruction. Engineers intend to inspect the damage but cannot put a timeline on how long it will take to replace it. [1] A temporary bridge has been erected now.
