In its early years, Leadville was the site of some famous mining swindles. When the Little Pittsburg mine exhausted its rich ore body, the managers sold off their shares while hiding the real condition of the mine from other stockholders. “Chicken Bill” Lovell dumped a wheelbarrow of rich silver ore into a barren pit on his Chrysolite mining claim in order to sell the claim to Horace Tabor for a large price; but Tabor had the last laugh when his miners dug down a few feet farther and discovered a rich ore body. Horace Austin Warner Tabor ( November 26, 1830 - April 10, 1899) also known as Silver Dollar Tabor and The Bonanza King of Leadville Later, the manager of the Chrysolite mine fooled an outside mining engineer into overestimating the ore reserves of that mine. Potential Dangers to Town

see Leadville tunnel

Above Leadville, there is Drainage Tunnel which was built during the Second World War to facilitate the mining effort. The Leadville mining district was the most productive silver-mining district in the US state of Colorado. It is known as the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel (LMDT, and not the Yak Tunnel which is a separate drainage tunnel that has been remediated in the 1990s via EPA Superfund site), and is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation. In 2001 this tunnel collapsed and water has continued to build in the mine shaft that the tunnel served. The water pressure inside the tunnel has been increasing since 2001 because of the rising water level in the mines. There is little doubt that this is a serious problem. If the blockage suddenly released, it could destroy a community near the tunnel outlet known as East Fork Village and contaminate the Arkansas River (which flows in to the Mississippi River) with heavy metals. The Arkansas River is a major Tributary of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River is the second longest River in the United States, with a length of from its source in Lake Itasca in Minnesota to There has been word that off pumping could begin on Thursday Feb. 21st 2008.
