History
The Lake Erie Monsters began with the revival of the dormant Utah Grizzlies franchise. This is about the defunct IHL/AHL team that folded in 2005 For the current ECHL team see Utah Grizzlies. The team was relocated to Cleveland, playing as the Lake Erie Monsters in the North Division. [1]
The team name, referring to Bessie, a creature of local folklore, was announced at a press conference by Dan Gilbert, owner of the Monsters, Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball team, and Quicken Loans. Bessie is a name given to a Lake monster in Lake Erie.
