Lacerta (pronounced /ləˈsɝtə/, Latin: lizard), is one of the 88 official constellations acknowledged by the International Astronomical Union. Latin ( lingua Latīna, laˈtiːna is an Italic language, historically spoken in Latium and Ancient Rome. Lizards are a large and widespread group of Reptiles of the order Squamata, with nearly 5000 species and ranging across all continents except In common usage a constellation is a group of celestial bodies that are connected together in some arrangement typically stars to form a visible figure or picture It is not among Ptolemy's 48 ancient constellations. Claudius Ptolemaeus ( Greek: Klaúdios Ptolemaîos; after 83 &ndash ca Instead it was created ca. 1687 by the astronomer Johannes Hevelius. Johannes Hevelius ( Latin) also called Johannes Hewel Johann Hewelke Johannes Höwelcke in German, or Jan Heweliusz (in Polish) It doesn't contain any really bright stars, no Messier object, no galaxy brighter than 14. Charles Messier ( June 26, 1730 &ndash April 12, 1817) was a French astronomer most notable for publishing an A galaxy is a massive gravitationally bound system consisting of Stars an Interstellar medium of gas and dust, and Dark matter 5m, no globular clusters and not a single named star. The apparent magnitude ( m) of a celestial body is a measure of its Brightness as seen by an observer on Earth, normalized to the value A globular cluster is a spherical collection of Stars that orbits a galactic core as a Satellite. Correspondingly it is rather difficult to find. The northern part lies on the Milky Way. The Milky Way (a translation of the Latin Via Lactea, in turn derived from the Greek Γαλαξίας (Galaxias sometimes referred to simply Lacerta is located between Cygnus, Cassiopeia and Andromeda on the northern celestial sphere. Before Johannes Hevelius adopted the name Lacerta several other names had proposed for this part of the sky, among them Sceptrum et Manus Iustitiae (= Sceptre and the hand of Justice) and Frederick's Honors. Sceptrum et Manus Iustitiae ( Latin for scepter and hand of justice) was a Constellation created by Augustin Royer in 1679 to honor Frederici Honores or Honores Friderici or Gloria Frederici ( Latin for Glory of Frederick) was a Constellation created by Johann Being a modern constellation there is no mythology surrounding Lacerta.
The same constellation was used by the Chumash as Lizard and is included in multiple stories. This constellation was supposed as one of many constellations encountered as one went to the Land-of-the-Dead.
