Laikó tragoudi (λαϊκό τραγούδι gr. popular/folk song) is called the Greek urban folk music (or Greek popular music) in general and especially the Greek popular music after the end of the 1950's.

At the time a new generation of musicians came of age that brought to the urban folk music of the time (Rembetiko) some changes that distinguished a new style, the so called modern laiko tragoudi or just plain laiko tragoudi. Rebetiko, plural rebetika, ( Greek ρεμπέτικο and ρεμπέτικα respectively occasionally transliterated as Rembetiko

Modern laiko tragoudi evolved from Rembetiko, but adopted innovations and influences, including the use of amplifiers on the instruments, the use o Drums and the four-chord bouzouki and, later on, Electronic keyboards. As Laiko became ubiquitous in 1960s Greece, a number of different schools emerged.
