The school traces its roots to "Kungsholmens Allmänna Läroverk" which began in 1902 in private accommodations on S:t Eriksgatan (St. Erik's Street), but moved into a new building on Hantverkargatan in 1907. The school has remained in that building ever since. In 1984, Stockholms Musikgymnasium (Stockholm Music School) moved into the same building and maintains a level of autonomy as a separate section of the school but within the same building. In 1987, the International Section moved out of Norra Real, another upper-secondary school in Stockholm, and joined Kungsholmens Gymnasium.
