Historically the area was called Higo province and was renamed to Kumamoto prefecture during the Meiji Restoration as part of the abolition of the feudal system. Higo (肥後国 Higo no kuni was an old province of Japan in the area that is today Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyūshū.
