Origin of the term

The term Krautrock was originally a humorous one coined by the UK music press (such as New Musical Express and Melody Maker), where "Krautrock" found an early and enthusiastic underground following. The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a Popular music Magazine in the United Kingdom which has been Melody Maker, published in the United Kingdom, was according to its publisher IPC Media, the world's oldest weekly Music Newspaper (It derives from the ethnic slur "Kraut", which had been used in the USA by the previous generation to refer to a German person. The following is a list of ethnic slurs that are or have been used as insinuations or allegations about members of a given Ethnicity or to refer to them in a derogatory (critical The German word Kraut when standing alone in English is used most frequently as an ethnic slur against German people ) The term "Krautrock" may not have lost its negative connotationsthough it should be noted that the British journalists who employed it were often highly admiring of the musicians and their music. As is often the case with musical genre labels, few of the bands concerned wished to see themselves pigeon-holed, and tended to eschew the term.

The book Krautrocksampler by Julian Cope (generally regarded as comprehensive primer on the subject), opines that "Krautrock is a subjective British phenomenon", as it is based rather on the way the music was received in the UK than on the actual West German music scene it grew out of. Krautrocksampler One Head's Guide to the Great Kosmische Musik - 1968 Onwards, written by former The Teardrop Explodes singer Julian Cope, is a book Julian Cope (born Julian David Cope on 21 October, 1957) is an English rock Musician, Author, Antiquary [1] For instance, whilst one of the main groups originally tagged as krautrock, Faust, recorded a seminal 12 minute track they titled "Krautrock", they would later distance themselves from the term:

. Faust is a German Krautrock band originally composed of Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, . . when the English people started talking about Krautrock, we thought they were just taking the piss. To take the piss is a British slang expression meaning to tease or ridicule . . and when you hear the so-called 'Krautrock renaissance', it makes me think everything we did was for nothing. [2]

It might also be added that the UK availability of critically-touted "progressive" records at discount prices did much to popularise them among British teenagers.

Characteristics

Krautrock is an eclectic and often very original mix of Anglo-American post-psychedelic jamming and moody progressive rock mixed with ideas from contemporary experimental classical music (especially composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, with whom, for example, Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay of Can had previously studied) and from the new experimental directions that emerged in jazz during the 1960s and 1970's. These factors all laid the scene for the explosion in what came to be termed krautrock, which arose at the first major German rock festival in 1968 in Essen. Although German rock music ( Deutschrock) didn't come into its own until the late 1960s it spawned many innovative and influential bands spanning genres such as Krautrock A music festival is a Festival oriented towards Music that is sometimes presented with a theme such as Musical genre, Nationality or locality [4] Like their American, British and international counterparts, German rock musicians played a kind of psychedelia. Krautrock and East Germany

By the early 1970s experimental West German rock styles had crossed the border into East Germany, and influenced the creation of an East German rock movement referred to as Ostrock. The German Democratic Republic ( GDR; Deutsche Demokratische Republik DDR; commonly known in English as East Germany) was a Socialist state Ostrock is Rock music from Communist East Germany. The word derives from the German word " ost " meaning "east" On the other side of the Wall, these bands tended to be stylistically more conservative than in the West, to have more reserved engineering, and often to include more classical and traditional structures (such as those developed by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in their 1920s Berlin theatre songs). The Berlin Wall (Berliner Mauer was a physical barrier separating West Berlin from the German Democratic Republic (GDR ( East Germany) including WikipediaWikiProject Composers#Lead section --> Kurt Julian Weill ( March 2, 1900 &ndash April 3, (born; 10 February 1898&ndash14 August 1956 was a German Poet, Playwright, and Theatre director. The best-known bands representing these styles in the GDR were The Puhdys and Karat.
