All of his university degrees - B. A. 1959; M. A. 1967; PhD. 1974 - were awarded by the University of Malaya. The title of his PhD thesis is The beginnings of political extremism in Malaya 1915-1935 (1973) and was supervised by Prof. Kennedy G. Tregonning, who was then the Raffles Professor of History.
