Ferrie won the British Boys Championship in 1996 and made his first appearance on the European Tour that year as an invitee at his local event, the Slaley Hall Northumberland Challenge, but he missed the cut. The Great North Open was the final name of a European Tour Golf tournament which was played at Slaley Hall a country house golf resort in Northumberland He turned professional in 1999. In 2000 he played mainly on the second tier Challenge Tour and claimed his first professional win at the Tessali Open del Sud. The Challenge Tour is the second tier men's professional Golf tour in Europe. He was successful at the 2000 Qualifying School, earning the right to play on the European Tour, but he initially struggled at that level and had to go back to the Qualifying School to retain his tour card for 2002. He won a second time on the Challenge Tour in 2001 by capturing the Challenge Total Fina Elf.
In 2003 he won for the first time on the European Tour at the Canarias Open de Espana. The Open de España (formerly the Spanish Open) is the national open Golf championship of Spain In 2005 he came from behind to win the Smurfit European Open, one of the leading tournaments in Europe, and won by two shots.
