Schools
Kathmandu University provides quality education in different streams of arts, sciences and management through the following six schools.
1) School of Arts 2) School of Education 3) School of Engineering 4) School of Management 5) School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS, formerly known as KUMS) 6) School of Science
Each school has several programs/courses in it. The School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) has the most number of students. The school was formerly known as KUMS, but a decision in 2006 changed its name officially to KUSMS, with the view that the school not only trains medical graduates and postgraduates but also runs various paramedical disciplines.

The objective of Kathmandu University is to provide undergraduate and post graduate programs in the fields of engineering, science, management, arts, education and medical sciences in the near future. Till today, it has been providing undergraduate courses in engineering (computer, electrical & electronics, and mechanical), science (pharmacy and biology & applied biology), management (Master in Business Administration), undergraduate studies in music and short duration courses provided by the School of Arts and the School of Education.
Kathmandu University was established in November 1991 as a private university[1] by an Act (KU 2005). This is the first privately-managed public institution of higher learning. The predecessor of the University was the Kathmandu Valley Campus founded in 1985. The campus started as a private campus affiliated to Tribhuvan University and offered courses in science at intermediate level (I. Sc). The Kathmandu University started its academic program in 1992 with the Intermediate in Science program. In 1994, the University launched Bachelor programs in Pharmacy, Biology and Engineering (electrical and electronics, computer andmechanical). Later, Environmental Sciences was included in its academic program. M. Phil and PhD programs were started in 1997. KU is strengthening its graduate programs whilemaintaining the intermediate level as well. In 2004, the highest number of students enrolledin MBBS program with 161 students in constituent colleges and 547 in affiliated colleges.
Kathmandu University is an independent, not for profit, non-government public institution which was created through private initiative. It is being developed as an institution of higher learning dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence.
The approximate amount of money that has been generated for the university's development efforts till this date is worth Rs. 155 million. Of this sum, Rs. 70 million is for land, Rs. 60 million is for building construction. The remaining Rs. 25 million is for development of the road, on landscaping and on purchasing equipment. The additional amount of money required to complete the entire construction work, as per the master plan, is Rs. 1. 3 billion. This is equivalent to US $ 25. 86 million. Of this the amount Rs. 856. 6 million or 67% of the entire cost has to be allocated for civil construction. The remaining allocations are for procuring furniture, equipment vehicles and books and journals.
Kathmandu University has been able to attract a pool of committed and qualified faculty members. Through the help of these faculty members curricula for various programs have been drafted. Schools are offering programs at the undergraduate as well as the post-graduate levels. These programs have elicited encouraging responses from students and parents. Except for the School of Education and School of Management, all other schools have already started operating at the university's premises at Dhulikhel. Four batches of students have completed their MBA programs from the School of Management.
