The castle was built in 1535 by Buei Yoshitada of the Mogami Clan to defend their southern border. [1] It gained importance during the struggles between Lord Mogami and Date Masamune. It later came under control of the Toki Clan, though the castle was torn down when they moved to another area in 1692. The tenshu (keep) was reconstructed in 1982 out of concrete.
