History
Theodore first started playing drums at the age of 15. He was soon involved with his high school concert band at Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, and took lessons on a full kit shortly after. Gilman School is a private all-boys school located in Baltimore Maryland, USA It was at this point that he studied percussion and learned how to map arrangements; dedicated practice had already become a daily habit. He also listened to a great variety of music, growing to love the likes of Billy Cobham, Elvin Jones and John Bonham. William C Cobham (born May 16 1944 in Panama) is a Panamanian American Jazz Drummer, Composer and Bandleader Elvin Ray Jones ( 9 September 1927 &ndash 18 May 2004) was one of the most influential jazz drummers of the Post-bop era John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham (May 31 1948 – September 25 1980 was an English Drummer and member of the band Led Zeppelin. He studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, located in Oberlin Ohio, was founded in 1865 and is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States
Around the end of his time in high school, he joined the band Golden and recorded and toured with them for ten years. Golden is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Oberlin Ohio. He also played with Royal Trux for a year-and-a-half. Royal Trux was an American Alternative rock band from 1987 to 2001, founded by Neil Hagerty (vocals guitar and Jennifer It was during this time that he met Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, who were performing their first gig with their experimental dub band DeFacto in El Paso, TX. Cedric Bixler Zavala (born November 4, 1974 in Redwood City, California) is the lead singer and lyricist of The Mars Volta, and Omar Alfredo Rodríguez-López (born September 1, 1975) is a Multi-instrumentalist, Songwriter, Lead guitarist and producer De Facto was a dub reggae band which included Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodríguez-López, Isaiah "Ikey" Owens and Jeremy Michael They became friends and the former At the Drive-In duo would later invite Theodore to join their Latin-tinged prog-rock band, The Mars Volta. At the Drive-In was an influential American Post-hardcore band from El Paso, Texas, that was active from 1993 to 2001 Progressive rock (often shortened to " progressive " " prog " or " prog rock " is a form of Rock music that evolved Theodore was The Mars Volta's drummer from 2001 to 2006. Influences
Theodore draws inspiration from many different forms of music but those most prevalent in his playing are jazz, fusion, and rock. Jazz is an American Musical art form which originated in the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States Fusion or more specifically jazz fusion or jazz rock, is a Musical genre that merges Jazz with elements of other styles of music particularly Rock music is a genre of Popular music often though not necessarily employing Electric guitar, Bass guitar, and Drums. He has also touched upon another factor which adds to his individual style - "Then there's a whole bunch of stuff from Haïti because my dad's Haïtian. My favorite Haïtian drummer is this guy called Azor. . . . . . The Haïtian music that moves me has the drumming from the voodoo rituals. It moves me because the patterns are connected to different spirits; it's a spiritual thing that is interconnected with dancing, sacrifice and devotion. It's fully passionate. There is nothing contrived about it. "
In interviews he regularly cites Billy Cobham of The Mahavishnu Orchestra as his main drumming influence: "My all-time favorite drummer is Billy Cobham. William C Cobham (born May 16 1944 in Panama) is a Panamanian American Jazz Drummer, Composer and Bandleader The Mahavishnu Orchestra was a Jazz-rock fusion group led by John McLaughlin, that debuted in 1971 and dissolved in 1976 and reunited briefly from 1984 to 1987 I love the way he plays. . . . . . [his] playing is so natural, powerful and dynamic at the same time. I pattern a lot of stuff after him. ". He has also been heavily inspired by John Bonham of Led Zeppelin: "He had one of the best feels in the history of rock. Led Zeppelin were . . . . . because [of him] I try and play with as much bombast as I possibly can. "
