John Pugh was educated at Prescot Grammar School on St Helen's Road in Prescot, Maidstone Grammar School and Durham University, where he studied Philosophy. Career before election to parliament

Formerly a religious studies teacher and Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, John Pugh has lived in Southport since 1974 and joined the Liberal Party in 1977. Religious studies, or Religious education, is the academic field of multi-disciplinary Secular study of religious beliefs behaviors and institutions Philosophy is the study of general problems concerning matters such as existence knowledge truth beauty justice validity mind and language Merchant Taylors' School Crosby (also known as Merchant Taylors' School for Boys Crosby) is a British Independent school, located in Southport is a seaside town on the Irish Sea coast situated within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, in England, UK. The Liberal Party was one of the two major British political parties from the early 19th century until the rise of the Labour Party in the 1920s and a third party Pugh served on Sefton Metropolitan Council, representing Birkdale, from 1987 until his election to Parliament. Birkdale is a village and district in the southern part of the Conurbation of the town of Southport, within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton At the time of his election, Pugh was leader of the council (from 1992), and of the Sefton Liberal Democrats.

Campaign interests

Amongst John Pugh's campaigning interests is public sector IT, specifically around the role Open Source Software might play. Open source is a development methodology which offers practical accessibility to a product's source (goods and knowledge Dr Pugh has argued that the public sector could reduce costs by increasing use of Open Source Software [3] and has accused the BBC of effectively giving Microsoft illegal state aid in only making their iPlayer download service available on Windows computers. Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational Computer technology Corporation, which rose to dominate the Home computer [4]

John Pugh also has interests in mental health policy, education and transport.

John Pugh's interests include philosophy, computers, weight-lifting and supporting Liverpool F.C.

Personal life

He is married to Annette with three daughters and a son. Liverpool Football Club are an English professional Association football club based in Liverpool England. He moved to Southport in 1974.
