Hill was born in Balham, London, the son of Alice Beatrice (Wyatt) and William Thomas Hill, a WWI-veteran, milkman, and bread delivery worker. Balham is a neighbourhood in South London, England. In November 1961, after retiring as a player, Hill became manager of Coventry City.
