Before being elected to Parliament, Fitzsimons was a lecturer in environmental studies at Auckland University. Fitzsimons is married, and has two adult children. She and her husband manage an organic farm in the Kauaeranga Valley west of Thames at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula.
