Atkinson attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she graduated with a BA in Communications in 1981. She then attended Yale Drama School in New Haven, Connecticut.
Ms. Atkinson launched her professional acting career by appearing in a Broadway production of All My Sons in 1987. All My Sons is a 1947 play by Arthur Miller. The play was twice adapted for film in 1948 and again in 1986 Subsequently, she landed title roles in more stage productions, which include Henry VIII, Tru, and The Art of Success.
